Students show support for media levy referendum at public meeting

Published:

On Thursday, October 15th, Chief Returning Officer Russell Waye and Deputy Returning Officer Habib Hasan hosted a public meeting on the media levy referendum, with 5 others in attendance.

The referendum will be held during next week’s MUNSU by-election, with voting starting on October 21st at 9:00 am until October 22nd at 9:00 pm.

In the event the referendum passes, the current student media levy would increase from $4 to $5.49 and be tied to inflation, with the levy being split evenly between The Muse and CHMR-FM.

The original intent of the committee was to form a “yes” and “no” committee; however, a “no” committee wasn’t formed, and only a “yes” committee of three students was formed. Two people abstained.

Those three consisted of The Muse’s Editor-in-Chief Kaelem Tingate, Managing Editor Andrew Connors, and Queer Student Rep candidate Jane Meadus.

The Yes Committee has been provided a $50 allowance to the Atic for campaigning, and if a no comittee is formed, they will recieve the same.
