Welcome Week Campus Tours Winter 2019

0

January 3rd, 2019 started out cold, windy and grey – not the best welcome to the new year. That did not deter the students at MUN, though. It was hard to miss the bright red and turquoise shirts emblazoned with the words “Ask Me” that the volunteers had donned, as they went about setting up for the events that were going to take place throughout the day. While the wind blustered outside, volunteers were welcoming the new students with smiles and Campus tours.

Since the Winter semester at MUN isn’t usually as busy as the Fall semester, students were guided to the Student Experience Office (UC 3005). There, Michael Mackey, the Operation Lead who was in charge of overseeing all the campus tours, along with a handful of other volunteers, allocated tour groups.

The tours had been planned beforehand. Therefore, once a volunteer had a certain number of people in their group, they took them to all the major buildings across campus, including (but not limited to) the Engineering building, the Science building, the Arts building, the Library, the Bruneau Centre, etc. The tours did not only involve showing students the campus and how to not get lost within five minutes of stepping foot at MUN, but they also included facts and helpful tips about where to find Help Centres, other services and accommodations available at the university, and even advice on how to deal with certain personal experiences. All this myriad of information was provided in an attempt to make the students feel less anxious about adjusting to the completely new environment of college life whilst simultaneously make the sprawling campus seem a little less intimidating.

Tours were taking place from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m., with the flow of confused and excited students slowing down to a trickle roughly around lunchtime. From then on, the tours became more and more personalized as individual students who had missed the morning rush came to the SEO with multitudes of questions. As a volunteer myself, I was able to take one of the new graduate students on a personalized tour to help him find his classroom, his professor’s office, the Department of Gender Studies as well as his student ID, as we consulted his checklist of things to do while at MUN.

Overall, despite the daunting weather outside, it seemed that many of the students who had showed up for the Welcome Week Campus Tours were instilled with more confidence, happiness and a sense of belonging than when they had arrived.

The 2019 Super Bowl Will be the Least Entertaining Match-up Possible

0

Well, I guess it’s official: early February will see the ever-dominant New England Patriots take on the rising star that is Sean McVay and the L.A Rams. Although the divisional championships were glorious overtime games that had fans jumping out of their seats in bars across the known world, the Superbowl will likely not be as exhilarating to watch (given how incredible the alternative match-ups could have been).

New Orleans versus New England would have been a blast to watch. Drew Brees attempting to cement his legacy and find a high-note to retire on through a heavyweight bout against an equally venerated legend of the sport would have been amazing.

The Rams and Chiefs have already proven that, when pitted against each other, they can create sports magic the likes of which analysts and fans have never experienced before. Their week eleven battle scorched the earth and blotted out the sun, with over a hundred points being put onto the scoreboard in a war that saw touchdowns met with counter-touchdowns play after play. Seeing an epic rematch of this event would spark a franchise rivalry and offer both sides a chance to show the world what the next generation of pass-heavy football looks like.

But, alas, we are stuck with the ever-persistent Patriots yet again. They will probably win against the Rams, who, despite the natural talent of Goff and Gurley, simply do not possess the experience or football IQ to defeat a riled-up Bellichick on the day of a Superbowl. The score will likely be something along the lines of 20-7, and will definitely not go into overtime. I am willing to bet money on that.

But hey, at least we’ll be able to see some cool and fun Bud Light commercials!

Pakistani Students’ Association & guard.me: Winter Welcome 2019

0

Pakistani Students’ Association (PSA) and guard.me campus ambassadors kicked off 2019 with a successful Winter Welcome event on January 18th. The event was free, open for all and a perfect example of inclusivity and student unity, attracting both Pakistani and non-Pakistani students alike, whose zeal and enthusiasm were nothing but contagious.

The event started off with the National Anthem of Pakistan, followed by the introduction of the organisers. PSA is a student organization at Memorial University whose mission is to create awareness amongst students at MUN about the culture of Pakistan, using events, sports, and festive celebrations. In light of its astounding efforts, PSA was awarded the best Society of the Year 2018 at International Student Recognition Awards (ISRA). guard.me campus ambassadors, the co-organisers for the event, have collaborated with several other student organisations in the past, including the Internationalization Office (IO), Indian Youth Association (IYA), and Nigerian Students’ Association (NSA).

PSA has its annual elections at the beginning of every year. As announced in the welcome week event, the nominations for PSA general elections 2019 are now open.

PSA has also started an initiative to contribute to the crowdfunding for construction of water reservoirs in Pakistan. To help with their efforts, they asked the audience for a generous contribution to the Dam Fund. Ahsan Kaleem, vice president of PSA, commented,

Along with having fun, PSA is also aware of its social responsibilities. PSA has started an initiative to collect dam funds to better water supply in Pakistan and we strongly urge everyone to contribute!

After the presentation ended, the exciting part of the evening started: the games.

To get everyone to know each other, the games started with two truths and one lie. Participants had to write down, as the name suggests, two truths and one lie about themselves on a piece of paper, fold it into a plane and throw it. They were asked to pick up a random paper plane, find that person and figure out the lie.

After having a brief mixer, it was time for Rooh Afza pong. The game is like beer pong but the cups are filled with Rooh Afza, a famous Pakistani drink. It was an arcade style game, with the person scoring the highest, winning the tournament.

The highlight of the evening, however, was the Scavenger Hunt. The participants formed six teams and had to finish all the tasks on the list within 30 minutes and post it on Instagram with #PSAWinterWelcome19. The level of creativity in each and every post was astounding and everyone had a good laugh. Mesam Timmar, the external affairs and communications coordinator for PSA remarked,

The energy level of all the students at the games was astonishing!

The winners of all these games received gift vouchers sponsored by guard.me.

After games, Pakistani dishes were served for dinner. The menu included Vegetable Rice, Chicken Korma, and Chickpea curry for main course, and Rasmalai and Rooh Afza for dessert. The event concluded with musical chairs followed by the announcement of the Scavenger Hunt winners.

PSA organises exciting events every month, full of entertainment and spiced up with Pakistani dishes for all MUN students. They can be reached at fb.com/psamun14 for more details.

CES 2019: Latest Trends in Technological Innovation

0

CES, or the Consumer Electronics Show, is the world’s gathering place for all those who thrive on the business of consumer technologies. It is an annual event, which usually takes place in January and recently celebrated its 50th anniversary. The conference attracts around 180 thousand participants coming from over 150 countries. More than 4500 companies, from a wide range of industries, such as manufacturers, developers, hardware specialists and others, were showcased in this event. Some of the innovations presented at the show are still in use today – like the gaming console Xbox, OLED TV, Tablets, Wearable Technologies and many more. This year’s edition of the event took place between Jan. 8th and Jan. 11th, 2019.

One of the highlights of the event was LG’s newest innovation, R9 Rollable 4K OLED TV. As futuristic as this sound, we have finally come to the point in our technologically advanced world, when we have a screen that rolls away into a metallic box when it is not in use. Continuing with the foldable phones trend, a Chinese company by the name of Royole introduced a full-fledged bendable smartphone that could be folded into a double-sided mobile (with a starting price of $1318). While on telecommunications wave, we should definitely mention the flagship models showcased by Huawei and LG – namely the Mate 20 Pro and the V40 ThinQ.

CES prides itself in presenting avangard inventions, which push human imagination forward. The tech giant Samsung displayed a set of robots that can perform a variety of tasks, such as keeping track of your sleeping patterns, helping you improve the quality of your sleep, as well one that can help direct the customers to products that they are looking for. Following suit is a company called Misty Robotics which introduced the Misty II – a petite robot that is built for developers to help commercialize the robot in coming days. Let us not forget UBTech’s walker robot – a functional robot which has the ability to hang up bags, retrieve soda and cans of chips, play music and even dancing.

Last but not least is the 5G. What we currently know about 5G is that it is capable of speeds that are 1,000 times that of 4G LTE meaning 4K streaming would load instantly on such a network. Qualcomm, the prominent chip manufacturer, recently announced its 5G-ready Snapdragon 855 processor.

At the end of the day, CES carries an important mission. It provides a platform to innovators to test their potential and push the boundaries of what is deemed possible even further. The event also allows us to take a glimpse of what our future may look like and the products that will be in it. Not only are these innovations probable to come into existence, some of them are definitely a futuristic option for the consumers that will help make their life a tad bit easier. As for now, we aspire to see even more and bolder innovations in the upcoming CES editions.

Top Three Reasons Why The Ravens Are a SuperBowl Contender Next Season

1

The past couple of years have been excruciating for Ravens fans. Last season, Baltimore had every opportunity to make it into the playoffs, with the statistics of the bracket system supporting their chances and with the last team on their schedule being as lukewarm as it was. All they needed to do was beat the Bengals (THE BENGALS) to make it into the playoffs. Andy Dalton proved to be too powerful for Flacco, and their season ended in that stadium.

This year was equally painful to watch. Riding off of the momentum of the excellent decision to make Lamar Jackson a starter, Baltimore cruised through the second half of the season with relative ease. When it mattered most, however, against the Chargers in their first playoff game, the Ravens offence couldn’t get the job done.

Despite these tragedies, the 2019/2020 NFL season will finally be the time that Baltimore ends the Lombardi trophy draught and reclaims its position as king of the league. Here’s why.

1 – Lamar Jackson is Replacing Joe Flacco

Depending on who you ask, Joe Flacco is either a Super Bowl caliber quarterback or a weekend warrior who can’t compete at the elite level. Although it cannot be disputed that he is a Super Bowl MVP, Joe Flacco has been phoning it in as a QB for a few years now. This season, the Ravens lost more games than they should have, and most of that blame can be placed squarely on Flacco. He stopped throwing the ball, instead opting to hand it off to Alex Collins every play. The throws that he did perform were often intercepted or missed their mark. And when placed on the field as anything other than a quarterback, Flacco stood off to the side and watched the athletes play football with his hands in his pockets in a way not dissimilar to Jay Cutler’s behaviour in the same situation. Joe’s glory days were over.

In a way, it was surprising how long it took Harbaugh to bench Joe and put Lamar Jackson onto the field. But after an injury forced him to do just that, Lamar Jackson proved himself as the more capable QB by blazing his way through the rest of the season with back-to-back victories. Lamar Jackson is a really good athlete.

The loss to the Chargers this week can be chalked up to some inexperience on the part of Jackson – he fumbled the ball and was sacked numerous times in the first half of the game alone, failing to score any points for a long time. But this inexperience really only reared its head during this high-pressure playoff game. Jackson froze under the lights of the stadium, and under the implications of the possible loss. With more practise and experience next season, Jackson will be able to contend with other playoff- level teams when the time comes.

2-  John Harbaugh is Staying

John Harbaugh is an excellent coach, with a Super Bowl victory already under his belt. Rumours of his replacement probably would have come to fruition if not for the amazing turnaround that the Ravens had midway through the season. If he had been cut, and some other coach had been brought in to replace him, then who knows how that would’ve gone. Transitionary pains can destroy a team outright – just look at the pulseless trash-fire that is the Oakland Raiders.

Harbaugh is an excellent defensive coach. The Ravens’ defence under his coaching is known as one of the best in the league; and Terrell Suggs is (as far as we know) returning next season so there is no cause for concern on that side of the locker room. As for offence, Lamar Jackson will allow Harbaugh to experiment with run-heavy, old-school styles of offence and make better use of a wider range of running backs. That’s not to say that Jackson can’t throw the ball – it just so happens that great running plays were made with Jackson on the field this season.

3-  The Patriots and Steelers are Weakening

Look, let’s face it. The Pats weren’t what they used to be this season. Tom Brady is old. There are rumours that Grownkowski may retire soon. They lost to the Tennessee Titans this season, a mid-range team at best who isn’t even in the playoffs. They also lost the Championship game to Philadelphia last year. The New England of years gone by would simply not have allowed that to happen.

With the biggest challenger in the AFC beginning to show cracks in their armour, the Ravens have a better chance of clinching the division and not running into opposition late in the season. In addition to this, the Steelers had a pretty terrible run this season. They didn’t make the post-season, and the argument cannot be made that it is entirely due to the much-talked-about absence of Le’Veon Bell. They are, like the Patriots, getting old and rusty. Mike Tomlin hasn’t brought home a Lombardi trophy in a real long time.

Because of this, Baltimore will have an easier time in the otherwise high-school level AFC North. The Bengals are trash, and the other team in the division is Cleveland. Say what you want about Baker Mayfield, but it’s going to take a lot more than him and the firing of Hugh Jackson to turn the team around completely (although the Browns had a very impressive season following Hugh’s departure). In the end, we’ll just have to wait and see who the replacement head coach is and if they can start the season strong next year. Either way, Baltimore’s chances are looking great next year.

Get off the Green!: Regulating Cannabis on Campus

0

Reporter: Kyle Wiseman

It’s a time that will forever be remembered throughout history – cannabis is finally legal across Canada. Yet where there should be shouts of joy, instead there is public outcry; many seem to think that nothing’s really changed.

Late October, Memorial University sent out their regulations for cannabis use on campus as a reminder for students. Since 2013, Memorial has been a smoke-free environment, a policy that likely won’t change in the future. To the surprise of many students, cannabis isn’t allowed on campus in any form: smoke, vapour, or edibles. When asked why this policy is being enforced, the University has outlined two clear reasons.

Firstly, smoking on campus generates an environment of long-term health problems, something Memorial has been against since 2011. Since Memorial wants to promote a healthy environment and cigarette/cannabis use are closely integrated, it makes sense to keep both off of campus grounds.

Memorial’s second reason for the policy should make a lot more sense to students. Allowing recreational use of cannabis at Memorial would be counterproductive to the purpose of schooling. Students attend Memorial to learn, which is quite difficult to do while they are under the influence of recreational drugs.

How does this affect the actual students at Memorial? Views seem to be polarizing. “The smell of weed is way worse than cigarettes,” says Jennifer, a Folklore major. “And they smoke [cigarettes] everywhere.” Indeed, despite Memorial’s strict policy in maintaining a smoke-free environment, this has done little to prevent students from breaking the rules. But while students smoke cigarettes anywhere they’re not allowed to – in front of buildings with clear “No Smoking” signs – we’ve yet to see much cannabis use on campus in a similar fashion.

A recreational cannabis user, who chose to remain nameless, had much to say about Memorial’s choice to remain a smoke-free environment: “It’s as if nothing’s changed. We couldn’t smoke it when it was illegal, and we still can’t. What’s the point?”

It makes sense why Memorial is staying cannabis-free, though not everyone seems to agree. Whether students stop taking the campus-wide policy seriously, however, is still up for debate. Like cigarettes, cannabis may slowly begin to edge its way on campus. Or maybe students are actually concerned about what they learn, opting to keep cannabis off campus grounds. Only time will tell.

Finally, A Definitive Ranking of the Top Five Public Restrooms at Memorial University in Order of Luxury and Functionality

0

Reporter: Noah Laybolt

There’s nothing worse than desperately searching for a place to relieve yourself in a time of need and stumbling upon the waking horror that a poor layout, high traffic, or uncleanliness can turn a public restroom into. Memorial University has a huge campus with a ton of bathrooms, some good and some bad. Luckily for you, I’m about to list the top five. I’ve actually kept these spots a secret for many years, holding the locations of these linoleum treasures to myself. Only now have I decided to provide this service to the public, mostly due to the fact that I believe journalistic integrity involves selflessness. This is probably the most important article you will read during your studies here.

A Caveat: I am an arts student and have therefore not spent very much time in the engineering, chemistry, or business buildings. If there are any high-class lavatories in any of these places I haven’t really been exposed to them. Feel free to write me about this if I’m missing anything substantial that a STEM major would know about on that side of the campus.

Number Five: Education Building, Second Floor, Outside of Lecture Hall 2018 A-B

This room is like the scene in The Matrix where all of those gun racks zoom towards Neo and he’s just sort of taken aback by the awe and splendour of everything. The room is massive. I don’t know why they decided to install enough stalls, sinks, and urinals in this one bathroom to service an Olympic Village but they did. There’s also an exuberant amount of square footage available for just walking around. You could play softball in this bathroom. And the most beautiful part of it all? It’s almost always empty.

Number Four: The Music Building, First Floor, Near Instrument Lockers

This entry owes its spot on the list entirely to ambience. Yeah, things are maintained really well and there’s usually nobody here, but you can also faintly hear the sound of operatic singing and classical music playing as you take care of whatever needs to be taken care of. It’s angelic, transfixing, and ultimately a transformative experience that I wouldn’t trade for the world.

Number Three: Arts Building, Near The Cashier’s Office, Kind of Tucked into the Right Side if You’re Heading Towards the Gym

This is criminal. This bathroom has a much higher standard of cleanliness than any other that I’ve seen on campus, and I believe that’s because it’s used primarily by administrative people and those guys get preferential treatment. Didn’t expect this to devolve into classism? Too late. By using this hidden administrator’s bathroom between classes, you’re fighting the system and sticking it to the man. This room has pink tile, is rarely used, and has good mirrors and lighting. It is art.

Number Two: Bruneau Centre, Literally Any Bathroom, But Especially in the Graduate Studies Area Near the Back

Like celebrated American thespian Jeff “The Tank” Goldblum, this building is as beautiful on the inside as it is on the outside. It’s a glass paned feat of post-modernist architecture and you feel like you’re on the set of Grey’s Anatomy or an Avengers movie or something when you’re inside of it. The bathrooms don’t disappoint here either. Head to the graduate studies area to feel like you’re an extra on Suits taking a break between consultations. Very metallic and cool.

Number One: Education Building, First Floor, Gender-Neutral Bathroom

Want to feel progressive as hell while you use the bathroom? Congratulations hero, you’ve found the right place. There’s a stall, mirror, urinal, shelf, and sense of complete and total privacy in this room that locks with one of those convenient red/green “occupied” things and accommodates exactly one person. It could only get more comfortable than this if you were in the sanctity of your own dwelling. Props to MUN for setting this place up.

Thanks for reading this list. I hope that you use this powerful information for good.

Godspeed.

New Music Alert: ‘The Missing Mouth’, Latest Offering by Band ‘Another North’

Reporter: Modeline Nicholas Longjohn

Newfoundland based alternative rock band, Another North, comprised of members Aaron Morgan, Brad Wells and Joe Tucker, have released their much-anticipated sophomore record titled ‘The Missing Mouth’. The Missing Mouth comes four years after their 2014 release ‘Nomadic’, which launched them into the spotlight locally, and across the east coast of Canada. This band, which came together six years prior to the release of Nomadic, spent this time diligently honing their craft. The time spent between album releases made fans hungry for more of their unique take on alt-rock, which continues to receive acclaim.

When asked about the audience they hope to appeal to with their music, Aaron stated, “I think our music appeals largely to fans of 90’s and early 2000’s alternative rock – mostly children of the 80’s and 90’s, but I wouldn’t want to limit our appeal in that way. Age is not entirely a factor when it comes to some of the themes on the album; I think people from a broad age range could relate to most”. Like their 2014 album ‘Nomadic’ which includes songs such as Antidote, Live Like Bear, Suitcase Head and Malthus, Another North has created a range of sounds which are truly unique to their brand. A blend of songs on different themes with soundtracks that are both impossible to ignore and utterly compelling to listen to, evoking deep feelings in the listeners. Most songs, and indeed albums usually evoke specific emotions and feelings; sometimes its nostalgia, love, pain, passion and even plain old comfort. Like British music icon ‘Adele’ with ‘someone like you’ and American music star ‘Pharrell Williams’ with ‘Happy”. On the type of emotions they hope to evoke in their listeners, Aaron said, “Making music is in some ways a selfish process, for me. I don’t necessarily think about, or target, the emotion I hope it will create in others. I would say I am aware of the feelings myself and the rest of the band may be experiencing while writing and building the songs. That being said, if someone relates to a song in the same way I do,or even in a way I wouldn’t expect, that’s really meaningful for me.”

“The themes on the album could produce a variety of emotions. Some songs, like ‘Glass,’ may feel inspirational for some, which is obviously a good feeling to hope for in our listeners. Others are about loss and longing, love and connection, and even anger. It’s a varied record – both in the themes it contains, and the feel of the songs”. With the unique blend of sounds in ‘The Missing Mouth’, Another North is sure to go places, appealing to both lovers of alternative rock and non-lovers alike.

‘The Missing Mouth’ was launched officially on Friday, Nov. 23rd at the Rockhouse, George Street, St. John’s NL, with doors opening at 10:30pm and music starting at 11pm.

A STAR IS BORN: America Falls in Love with Bradley Cooper’s Romance Project

Reporter: Jacob A. Laybolt

Author Rating: 8/10

It appears as though Hollywood is not yet willing to change its current habits as the trend of remakes and reboots continues. 2018’s A Star Is Born marks the fourth attempt at telling the story of a talented but flawed star who falls for a younger protégé. The romantic musical began planning as far back as 2011 with recasting cycles between the script’s trades between various directors (including Clint Eastwood who has previously worked with Cooper) before finally landing on Bradley Cooper who assumed command in 2015, enlisting Lady Gaga soon after to co-star with him. Conveniently enough for the movie, the chemistry between the A-listers seemed all too genuine, as tabloids speculated the bizarrely functional relationship. Cooper, partners with Russian supermodel Irina Shayk since 2015, was surprisingly capable of musical performance through a character that was unique from past roles in a sense of genuity.

Without indulging any major spoilers, the film features the relationship of musicians Ally (Lady Gaga) and Jackson Maine (Bradley Cooper) as they stand the test of love and fame in the music industry which seeks to process them. With the well-trained direction of Cooper supplanted by Gaga’s impeccable vocal abilities, the soundtrack itself is a high-quality production when isolated from the film. While some may expect Cooper to lead the thespian aspects Gaga’s acting capability also makes an astonishing impact on the audience through the film. Interviews with Gaga indicate a high level of emotional dedication to the role which almost makes it seem less like an act, given the post-release heartbreak she has expressed, going so far as to keep multiple props from the set.

Additional cameos and appearances highlight the film via Dave Chapelle, Andrew Dice Clay, Alec Baldwin, and Lukas Nelson. These are only noteworthy when compared to the portrayal of Jackson’s protective older brother, Bobby, portrayed by Sam Elliott who serves as a secondary character with an adequate level of depth and emotion which Elliot exceeds at demonstrating.

The end product is a feature film which only has one major disappointment found in its morally obscure ending, which leaves the audience with a complete story with no real takeaway considering the context of the climactic events. While this film may dispel would be moviegoers due to its romantic and musical focus, the cultural value and quality should not be disregarded, making the film a must for anyone looking to take a trip to the theatres this month(especially considering the alternatives currently showing at venues). Aside from the main performance, the financial performance is perhaps more impressive, provided its box office returns of nearly $330 million, a solid return from its $40 million funding.
