Carbonear’s Dawson Mercer jets off to Winnipeg in blockbuster NHL trade

Mercer headlines package being sent to Winnipeg for superstar goaltender Connor Hellebuyck

The New Jersey Devils have sent Carbonear native Dawson Mercer to the Winnipeg Jets in exchange for superstar goaltender Connor Hellebuyck.

The forward was drafted 18th overall by New Jersey in the 2020 NHL Draft, and has yet to miss a single game in his NHL career, playing in 420 career games, scoring 103 goals and adding 110 assists for 213 points. Mercer is tied for third in the NHL for longest active ironman streak.

At only 24 years old, scoring 15+ goals in every season of his career and having never missed a game, he has proven to be a reliable option so far.

In 10 games this year Mercer has yet to score, but has 4 assists.

The Devils are acquiring superstar goalie Connor Hellebuyck, who requested a trade out of Winnipeg in the offseason after spending the first 11 years of his NHL career in the city.

Hellebuyck is a three-time Vezina trophy winner and won the Hart Memorial Trophy in 2025 as the leagues MVP, something a goaltender has won only nine times in the leagues history.

He also led the United States to Olympic Gold at the 2026 Olympics, being named best goaltender at the event.

Local hockey fans may remember Hellebuyck began his career right here in St. John’s, playing with the St. John’s IceCaps during the 2014-15 AHL season.
