Memorial University and Unpossible NL are partnering up to host an event on both the St. John’s and Grenfell campuses on February 3 and 4. At the Band Off Weekend, participants will form a band, write a song, record it and perform it – all in the span of two days.
The Band Off Weekend is a fun, non-competitive and inclusive event open to all levels of experience. Mentors will be on-site to help bands through the songwriting process and offer guidance to those trying out new instruments for the first time.
Never played an instrument before? Don’t have a band? Don’t worry! Bands are formed by drawing names from a hat and all levels of musical experience are welcome. The Band Off event page says it “provides a safer space to enable individuals from underrepresented groups to participate in the local music scene.”
Along with the Band Off Weekend, Unpossible NL also coordinates the Record Production Month (RPM) Challenge, which challenges participants to write and record an entire album of music all within the month of February. You can hear albums from past years’ challenges here.
