Introducing the New Portable Super Nintendo?

Well…Sort of…

If you’re like me, you’ve probably been debating whether or not the New 3DS is worth it ever since its launch a little over a year ago. Much like the DSi, the new 3DS does not have a lot to offer in the way of exclusive games, in fact, it’s pretty much just Xenoblade Chronicles 3D and The Binding of Isaac Rebirth. For $239.99 retail plus tax, the hardware upgrades are just not enough to convince a lot of people to take the plunge and upgrade to the New 3DS. Would more exclusive games change that? Well maybe.

Nintendo recently announced that a series of old Super Nintendo games such as Super Mario Kart, Earthbound, and Donkey Kong Country 2 would be released on the 3DS virtual console. There’s just one tiny little catch to go along with that: the games are only available on the New 3DS. Due to the increased hardware capabilities of the New 3DS, the system is now capable of emulating Super Nintendo games whereas the original 3DS and 3DS XL is not.

Some people think that the 3DS hardware not being good enough to emulate 20+ year old games is bull and that Nintendo is making these games exclusive to the New 3DS to push sales. Although they claim that the hardware capabilities do make all the difference, we cannot know for sure if it’s true or just cheap sales tactics. That being said, who cares. The point is the New 3DS has something else to offer now, another reason to upgrade to the latest model. Whether or not this makes the upgrade worth it is really up to the individual. If you have no interest in playing Super Nintendo games, or already have them for Super Nintendo, then this might not matter to you. However, if you always wanted to play games like Earthbound and Super Metroid portably then this is your dream come true.

This new line-up of Virtual Console games was announced on March 3 during a Nintendo Direct. They even went as far as surprising the audience by releasing three games that day. The second shipment of games was released on March 24 and the last will be available on April 14. Whether or not this list of games is all we’re ever going to get is unknown as of now, hopefully Nintendo will continue to release Super Nintendo games for the New 3DS and maybe eventually branch out and release some Gameboy Advance games. Please Nintendo? Please.
