Everyone who has taken part in a program at Harlow campus comes back with many stories of weekends in London, staying in hostels, riding the tube, and taking in the sights of London. There are also those trips to mainland Europe, including going to Paris, Berlin, Rome and Barcelona. While taking these trips are exciting, there is lots more to think about than just booking a flight online and running to the airport. Instead, there are a number of things that should be taken into consideration.
Flights: Europe is much more accessible and cheaper to fly to then it is to travel around North America, especially Newfoundland. Most times, to get off the island it is a couple hundred dollars plus taxes. In Europe, there are so many choices for airlines. For example, you have your regular commercial ones like British Airways, Air France, and KLM, which are all on the very expensive side. There is also an alternative, which are the to main discount airlines, Easy Jet and Ryan Air, which have sales on every week, presenting times when you can fly to places such as Dublin for as low as 20GBP.
Planning a weekend away is something that shouldn’t be taken lightly; it should be planned as early as possible. The earlier you book, the better the deal. Keep an eye on both the Ryan Air and Easy Jet websites for good deals. Something to note is that both these discount airlines are discount for a reason – there is no added features, just a seat and tray table. Also with discount airlines, you have to pay extra for luggage, so bare that in mind try and carry on if you can but note the size limits.
Getting from the airport to the city center can be a challenge, so watch out for options to purchase airport transfers when you buy your airline ticket. If not, do your research before hand and find out what the best way to get to the city center. There should be some good options, including shuttle, bus, train. As well, some hostels and hotels even offer an airport pick up for a small fee.
The second most important thing to do look at when traveling to a foreign land is accommodation. After a long day of traveling and exploring, you will want to find a clean, safe and enjoyable place to spend the couple of days you will be traveling. Hostel World and Hostel Bookers are two great websites for finding hostels and cheap hotels. Do you research, read the reviews and check the ratings before you book. I really have to stress this, as it is the key factor to finding out a great place to stay.
Lastly—do your research, check the travel advisories, be safe, and ultimately, have fun.
